Judge
Tim was born in Victoria, Texas, and moved to Corpus Christi at the age of eight. He attended local public schools and graduated from Richard King High School in 1996. He went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin and later earned his law degree from South Texas College of Law. After graduating in 2003, he returned home to Corpus Christi to begin his legal career.
Judge McCoy brings a broad range of legal experience in both civil and criminal law, with a career-long focus on juvenile cases and matters involving the abuse and neglect of children and the elderly. He was elected to serve as Judge of County Court at Law #5 in 2015 and is now the longest-serving judge in the history of the court.
Over more than a decade on the bench, Judge McCoy has presided over thousands of Child Protective Services cases and has reunited countless families and has celebrated new beginnings by finalizing hundreds of adoptions. He has become a pillar in the child welfare community in Nueces County and across the state of Texas, known for his steady leadership, sound judgment, and deep understanding of the systems and resources that support families in crisis.
Judge McCoy was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to serve on the Texas Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, a recognition of his leadership and expertise in juvenile justice. Judge McCoy has long held that there is always room for improvement and innovation when the futures of children in crisis are on the line. In 2026, Judge McCoy founded a revolutionary juvenile weapons court program, the first of its kind in Texas, designed to hold youth accountable while creating a path toward rehabilitation and long-term opportunity.
You will rarely find Judge McCoy, on or off of the bench, without County Court at Law #5 mascot, Daisy, his faithful labrador and honorary K9 CASA volunteer. Outside of the courtroom, he spends his time with his own children and remains actively involved in serving the community he has long called home.
Known for his integrity, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to those he serves, Judge McCoy continues to lead with experience, strength, and a clear dedication to justice for the most vulnerable members of our community. His compassion and temperament on the bench have ushered in countless personal transformations and new beginnings for those who appear before him. He has filed for re-election in 2026 and plans to seek several more terms serving Nueces County's most vulnerable.
